Everyone loves to be spooked, right?
This Halloween, why not get your students to produce some writing related to the theme? To get you started, here are some writing prompts that you and your students may enjoy:
For any age group:
- Write a menu for the Road Kill Cafe.
- Rewrite a popular story/fairy tale from the perspective of the monster or bad guy.
- Write a letter to the public from a popular monster's point of view about how the monster is simply "misunderstood".
- Watch a scary movie and write the movie trailer for it. Students may also like to act it out for the rest of the class.
- Write an announcement for a Halloween party.

For young learners:
- Imagine monsters have attacked the city. Write (and later act out) the news report.
- You are a news reporter and have just landed an assignment to interview a popular Halloween character (i.e. a ghost, witch, zombie, mummy, vampire, etc.). Write 10 questions you would ask during the interview.
- Design a monster house. Then write a description of it.
- Write the recipe for a Witches' Brew.
- Think of a costume you would like to wear for Halloween. Write instructions for how you would make/wear it.

For adults:
- Write the real estate listing for a haunted house.
- Write about a time that you were spooked, either recently or when you were smaller. Where were you? What happened? How did you feel? How do you feel about the incident now?
- Describe a recurring nightmare you have had.
- Think of something you would like to change about your life. Write a potion for it. Include the name of the potion, ingredients, purpose, directions for use, and anything else that might be needed, such as a price or a warning label.
- Write a short poem called an acrostic, using the word ghost. Each line of the poem should start with the corresponding first letter of the word. For example, the first word of the first line would start with g, the second word of the second line would start with h, and so on.
