Do you spend hours of your free-time correcting workbooks?
Does the idea of marking 50 tests fill you with a sense of dread?
Avoid the stress and encourage student autonomy and co-operation by following this advice:
1.Set aside sufficient time in a class period (this will depend on the amount of work to be corrected)
2.Have students working in groups of 4/5, sitting around a table if possible.
3.Assign one student the role of “teacher”. (make sure to rotate this role each time, and try giving the responsibility to a shyer or weaker student – watch their confidence grow as they are the authority).
4.Give the “teacher” a copy of the answers.
5.Have students swap their papers/workbooks, so everyone is marking someone else’s work. This avoids cheating.
6.Students should use a different colour pen to mark their peer’s work.
7.The “teacher” then calls out the answers as everyone corrects and comments on each others’ work.
Peer correction will naturally take place in this situation and it also frees up the teacher’s time allowing us to move around the class monitoring and answering any queries.
