Teaching Large Multilevel Classes

E-mail Print PDF
Every teacher knows that teaching large groups is challenging, yet it is reality for many. Large groups impose physical and logistical constraints on the types of activities teachers can do in class. Large groups can be difficult to manage. Students in large groups often vary considerably in their language skills. All the same, teaching large groups can be effective and enjoyable. In this workshop we will discuss the special challenges this kind of class imposes on ELT teachers and explore ways to deal with different levels in large groups. Next, we will discuss strategies teachers can use to motivate students in large classes. Finally, we will discover activities that engage every student, from low-prep dictation exercises to student-centered communicative activities.

In this workshop we will discuss strategies for teaching students the difference between the “p” word – plagiarism – and paraphrasing and summarizing.

In this workshop, we will explore the potential of the portfolio to engage and motivate learners and discuss how a portfolio can be used to support students having difficulties.

Using Projects to Motivate Teens

Anyone who’s worked with teenagers will agree that this age group is probably the hardest to motivate. Ask teenagers why they study English and answers range from “Because I have to,” to “My parents say it’s good for my future…”. In this workshop, we’ll explore the use of projects and other creative tasks in motivating these notoriously difficult learners.

Competencies? A trendy word – yes, but do you really know what it means and how to plan based on it? In this workshop we’ll de-mystify the word and look at what it means in practical terms, especially when evaluating our young learners.
